Happy Holidays!!

I hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

For those of you who are pregnant, please remember:

1. Stay Hydrated! If you will be doing a lot of traveling make sure you stay well hydrated. Becoming dehydrated can increase your braxton hicks contractions, and can also put you at risk for pre-term labor.
This also means you'll have to plan frequent bathroom breaks so that you can stay comfortable!

2. ALWAYS wear your seat belt. No, it's not always comfortable, but your seat belt should always be worn. The lap belt should be exactly there, in your lap, under your belly. Not on your belly! And your shoulder strap should be worn normally.

3. Eat well. Remember to stay clear of unpasteurized cheeses, uncooked meats, and certain fish. Fill your plate with plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. And yes, that scoop of ice cream on your pie does count as a serving of dairy (which has calcium!!) ;)

Belly Mapping Success!

Last night I was able to attend the Belly Mapping event in Atlanta. It was held at the office of Dr. Brad Bootstaylor (See Baby), and our instructors were Nichole Feinauer and Christine Strain. Nichole and Christine have been able to work together on this presentation and I think they did a great job of explaining the basics of belly mapping.

After everyone had mapped their bellies, with the help of the myriad of doulas that were also in attendance, one of the sonographers from See Baby was available to perform an ultrasound to confirm what the mother's had mapped. It was all great fun, with a very large percentage of mother's being right about their baby's position.

I am looking forward to the next Belly Mapping event, and hopefully I'll see some of you there!

Belly Mapping...

Hello Atlanta!!! To the left of this post you may see an event widget announcing Belly Mapping at See Baby in Atlanta. This event is FREE to expectant couples, there is a cost for us birth professionals. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Atlanta Birth Center.

If you are not aware of Belly Mapping, you should head over to Spinning Babies and take a quick look (or look all day!) If you choose to join us on Monday night, you will get some great hands on help in understanding and applying this technique. It is more important than you would imagine to help your baby line up for birth, and we will show you how to check your baby's position.

As an added bonus, we are being hosted by See Baby, and they will be providing *free* ultrasound confirmation of your baby's position ~if you are interested~. Yep, a free event, with free ultrasounds, in a very spa-like atmosphere!! So, I hope you will come out!!

If you are planning to attend send a quick email to events@gabirthnetwork.com

Childbirth Education

If you don't already know, childbirth education is a very important tool in having a safe, and satisfying birth experience. Here are some links on the importance of a childbirth education class:

LA Times Article

Here's Why: Response to LA Times Article

I probably won't be the first to tell you that a hospital class is not good enough. Typically you are taught about that hospitals procedure and routine for a laboring woman. They do not go into detail about the stages of labor or comfort measures for each stage. They may not tell you all the risks or benefits associated with tests and procedures. I took the hospital class for my first birth. We watched videos of births where the women were completely draped, every vaginal birth was flat on mom's back and included an episiotomy. They taught us how to be good, compliant patients. There was no support for a normal, unmedicated birth. So, choose wisely, which class is right for you. Even if you plan on having an epidural as your main comfort measure, it is still important to learn about the stages of labor, and alternative comfort measures, just in case you don't have time, or if your epidural doesn't work the way you were expecting it too. And for many, many, other reasons!

I will begin teaching Baby Steps childbirth classes in Rome, Georgia in January. I will be teaching out of the Spencer Family Chiropractic office located at 503 W. 10th Street. For more details on classes see my Childbirth Education page, or visit www.babystepsonline.net
